As Canton Public Schools continues to evolve and as a sci~ool community strives "to develop students who are
competent thinlceas, curious and confident learners and compassionate citizens" as stated in otu- mission
statement, we as a district need to invest in the learning resources that provide that our students with the tools to
maximize their leaniing potential.
We have made strides in the area of technology and digital learning over the last few years and implementing a
true gr's 6-12 1:1 Chromeboolc initiative will allow teachers to design creative and innovative lessons that will
provide more meaningful learning opportunities for our' students. A 1:1 Clu-oineboolc initiative will allow us to
grow in many strategic areas of focus, all of which are embedded within our Canton Public Schools Strategic
Fraineworlc, specifically the following:
Access- students will have individual devices that allow for more personalized learning
opportunities through extensions/add-ons and programming for all students including
students with disabilities and Engish Language Learners
~ Equity-with a no/low cost to families, a 1;1 initiative creates a level playing fietd for all
students with every student having the same device
e 1'nstruction- allows teachers to better design and plan lessons
e Collaboration- fosters communication and collaboration amongst students and teachers
• Student Yoice- allows students to demonstrate learning in new and creative ways and
provides a tool that will encourage student ownership of learning
• Security/Control- CPS will now own, update and manage all devices. This will allow for
easier MCAS testing and more control over content monitoring, student privacy and
security, maintenance and updating
We are looking to notjust replace pen and paper with a Chromeboolc, but to enhance our currieuluin and
knowledge base to better engage students and create rigorous and rich learning opportunities to better prepare
otu~ sttidents for the world today.Source page 99

DEPARTMENT• Teaching and Learning PreK-8 SUBMITTED BY: Deborah Rooney
PROJECT /EQUIPMENT TITLE: PreK-5 Classroom Libraries
TOTAL PRO]ECT /EQUIPMENT COST (must be at least $5,000): $332,650
DESCRIPTION: This request will help us to build PreK-5 Classroom libraries that support
independent reading.
PURPOSE.]USTIFICATION AND SUPPORT FOR STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK:
(Attach additional pa4es if necessary)
This request aligns with the Strategic Framework 3.1 Designing Student Learning and Growth. Literacy materials have not been
updated since 2010, when Canton adopted the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys literacy curriculum. In FY20 we will begin the
professional development that will prepare teachers to transition to a new model of literacy instruction that supports students with
authentic texts PreK-5. It is recommended that classroom libraries be provisioned with books that have a range of reading levels, topics
and genres to support independent reading with a minimum of 30 books per student as a start. This quote is based on purchasing the
Units of Study Classroom Libraries for each homeroom and the special education classes at Hansen and Luce. We will inventory
classroom libraries prior to purchasing to determine the specific needs of each classroom. We can purchase the libraries in smaller
shelves to spread this cost over multiple years.
