ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH
The Board of Health herewith , submits its annual report. The
Board organized at the office of Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter was elected
chairman and Thomas J. Dockray secretary. Miss Eliza Reilly
was reappointed local agent. The work of ,the Board of Health
has been carried out much along the line as in previous years. We
have had a very few serious contagious diseases, during the year.
The Board is pleased to announce that complaints relative to the
collection of garbage have been relatively very few and upon in-
vestigation we find Ii.ttle or no foundation for such complaints, the
collection of garbage having been carried on in a most sllitisfactory
manner.
Signed,

The Board
was organized at the April Meeting by the election
of Mr. Roger Williams as chairman, lVIr. James P. Lynch as secre-
tary, and Mr. Joseph P. Draper a,; treasurer.
Miss Gertrude C. Ryan and :\ 11'13. Rose S. Holmes were re-
appointed librarians Mr. James P. Skehan was reappointed super-
intendent of building and grounds.
The Trusteesgratefully acknowledge gifts of books, magazines
and other publications received during the year from Mrs. William
flkillen, Mrs. Herbet Raymond, Miss Lillian Shattuck, Mrs. Paul
A. Draper, Mrs. John Linder, National Sculpture Society, Depart-
ment of Roads, Quebec, and the Community Club of Canton.
Special mention should be made of the following generous
gifts:
Thirty-five volumes of travel and biography from Mr. John
Ceorge Simmons.
A set of " World' s Best Literature" forty- five vclumes, from
Mrs. Augustus Hemenway.
Twelve books of juvenile fiction from Miss Charlotte Braley.
Again we are indebted to Mrs. Albert F. Morse for the loan
of several sets of pictures for exhibition Reading Room, thein the
most notable being a very complete set of George Washington
views and clippings collected in honor of the Washington Bi- cen-
tennial Year. Other sets were " Daniel Webster", " Maine Piotures",
American Indians" and " New England Vacation Land".
In October the girls of the 4- H Club ( Norfolk County Agri-
cultural School Extension service) held in the Library Building an
interesting exhibition of their work for the year.
Free delivery of books at Ponkapoag was stopped at the be-
ginning of the year for lack of patronage. This does not mean
that people in that part of the town are making less use of the
119Source page 120
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OF CANTON
Library. The fact is that most all nowadays have their own means
of rapid transportation and come directly to the Library for books.
Deposits of books continue to be made at the Eliot and Pon-
kapoag Schools through the courtesy of the Eliot Parent- Teacher
Association, which is responsible for the transportation.
No changes have been made in the general administration of
the Library during the past year, and we believe the service
ndered to the Library patrons has been efficient and satisfactory.
r()
Approximately the usual number of books have been added to the
Library, and the same general m(lthods of selection have been fol-
lowed.
It is very gratifying to note in these times the greatly in-
ereased use that is being made of the Library, especially in the
number of books issued for home use. The circulation for 1932
was almost 8000 volumes greater than that of 1931, and this
makes 1932, with its 61, 911 books in circulation, the best year in
the history of the Canton Public Library.
The Librarians' report appended herewith gives interesting
details of the use that is being made of the Library. The Treas-
urer' s Report gives full details of the expense of administration
and maintenance of the Library.
The Trustees recommend that there be appropriated for the
use of the Library during the year 1933 the sum of $ 4, 500. 00.
