Books may be kept 14 days and renewed once for the same
period; except new fiction, which is issued for seven days and is
not renewable; and certain other books for which there is a great
demand, which cannot be loaned for so long a time. This rule may

change in respect to s other
booi<: than fiction.
A fine of two cents a day is charged on all over-due books.
The borrower is responsible for books drawn by means of his name
and fines upon the same. Books lost must be paid for by the
person to whom they stand charged. Borrowers shouId notify the
Library at once of change of residence. Th~ issue of books will
be suspended as to persons not complying with the Library regula-

careful consideration of the Trustees. A " request book" for this
purpose is kept on the bulletin board in the delivery room.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OFl CANTON
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
TO' the School Cemmittee ef Canten:-
I hereby submit the annual repert ef the Scheel Department
of Canten.
Elementary Schools
Educational Standards
Educatienal depend upon the requirements made by
Standards
Beards ef Educatienand autherities. These requirements
Scheel
are concerned with the subject matter to' be taught, the character
er quality ef the teaching, and the general efficiency ef the teach-
ers. Certain subjects, such as Reading, Writing, Histery, Gee-
graphy, Physielegy, etc., are required by law to' be taught in the
public schools. The required list cevers the varieus fields ef
knewledge deemed necessary by the State a".ltherities as the feunda-
tien fer geod citizenship and a preparatien for mere advanced
study.
A cemplete Ceurse ef Study is in use in all the Canten E'le-
mentary Scheols, indicating what is to' be taught in each subject,
and outlines by the State Beard O'f Edllcatien furnish additienal,
valuable suggestiens fer teaching.
A cemprehensive Ceurse ef Study usually cevers mere than
can be mastered in the alletted time by an average class ef pu-
pils. Thi~ necessitates en the part ef the teacher careful judg-
ment in selecting and emphasizing essential facts and processes.
Modern standards demand trained, experienced teachers, able to
se'iect these facts and carry out the program ef ed'.lcatien. It is
only fair testate that the teachers ef Canten deserve to' be com-
mended for efficiency and devetien to' their work. All whO' are
interested in the training ef beys and girls shO'uld endeaver to'
visit the varieus class reems and see fer themselves the werk that
is being dene in eur schoels.
School Organization
changes have taken place in the organizatien ef schools
Great
since theperied. In the early days pupils of all ages
Colonial
and varieus classes were greuped tegether in ene reemunder a
single teacher. This system undeubtedly had its disadvantages,
but was not whelly witheut merit. It called fer efficient discipline
and careful planning en the part ef the teacher and gave the
125Source page 126
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN om CANTON
pupils ideas and thought beyond the worit of their immediate
grades. Mooern standards calling for greater concentration and
progress have made this type of school nearly obsolete. One grade
for each teacher is the ideal organization at the present time.
While this arrangement is highly desirable, it is sometimes dif-
ficult to secure because of increased costs ca'.lsed by transporta-
tion of pupils or the erection of new buildings. The teacher
with two or more classes in a room can often combine them in
certain lessons and by careful planning still meet the require-
ments of each grade.
Another feature of modern education is the so-called " 6- 3- 3"
plan. This plan calls
years in the Elementary
for six schools,
three years in the Junior High and three years in the Senior High
School. There may be certain advantages in this type of organiza-
tion but it has not been universally adopted. There are still ex-
cellent school systems having eight years in the Elementary
Schools and four years in the Senior High School.
Results
The completion of eight years' work in the Elementary Schools
is but one step in the educational process. Graduates of the eighth
grade should possess sufficient knowledge of the rcq-lired subjects,
Language, Arithmetic, History, Geography, etc., to serve as a
basis for further study in the High School. Intelligence tests,
examinations and report cards are part of the machinery used by
teachers to tabulate results. We believe from all the evidence
that the boys and girls in our schools measure up to proper stand-
ards of modern education. The graduation exercises of the vari-
lS Elementary
O". Schools deserve special mention also for their ex-
cellent character.
Special Subject
Special lessons have been given during the past year on " How
Things Are Made." The clothes that we wear, the houses we live
in, the furniture, stationery, money, etc., that we use in daily life
can all be made the subject of interesting study. These lessons
inspire pupils with new and valuable ideas concerning the various
industries, and furnish excellent material for training in oral and
written composition.

MEMORY GEMS
ELEMENTARY GRADES
OVER AND OVER AGAIN
Over and ot'er again,
No m, dter which way I turn
I always find in the Book of Life
Some lesson I have to learn.
I must take my turn at the mill
I must grind out the golden grain
1 must work at my task with n resolute will,
Over nnd over again."
J osephine Po'Jlard.
The High School
The total membership of the High School for the year ending
J'.me 23, 1933 was 229. This is the same the total member-
as
ship for the year ending . Tune 24, 1932. The indications are, how-
ever, that a larger number will be registered during the current
year 1933- 34. The modern High School with all the opportunities
that it offers has grown to be the People' s College. It is a source
of satisfaction t06now that parents and pupils appreciate the value
of a High School course.
Conclusion
In conclusion I sincerely thank the School Committee. teach-
ers and citizens of Canton for continued support and cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
ALBERT S. AMES,
Superintendent of Schools.
