repairs have been made on the apparatus and a new
Minor

The two LaFrance trucks will be 9 years old in July, 1934,
and the Reo truck in Ponkapoag is 8 years old. This apparatus
is in good condition, with the exception of tires, which will be
replaced at 'Once.
There are 32 miles of Fire Alarm wire in service, with 9
house tappers, 1 bell striker, and 1 air whistle. Trees have been
trimmed and cut along the entire length of this wire. The
for this work was received from the Federal Emergency Ad-
ministration.
Regular practice and instruction has been carried on as usual
during the year. The Chief and two of the permanent men at-
tended the Firemen' s Training School at ton, which
Broci\: was
conducted by the State Department of Education.
During the year the Department answered 133 alarms. The
following is a classified list of the total calls;
32 Woodland Fires

g". and clearing catch
basins has been attended to.
Snow has been removed, sidewalks ploughed, and gutters kept
open.
At time of making my report, I cannot give a complete re-
port on the Dedham Street bridge. We have been delayed con-
siderably owing to bad weather and high wate1".
In closing, I would recommend the following appropriations:

REPORT OF MOTH SUPERINTENDENT
I herewith submit my annual report as local Moth Superin-
tendent for the year ending December 31, 1933.
Part of the town has been treated with creosote and the rest
shall be done as soon as possible. The town this year has sprayed
one hundred and forty-eight places with arsenate of lead, and
seventy- seven places with lime and sulphur, for which the town
has been reimbursed.
The moth situation in general is very good. With assistance
from the C. W. A. we were greatly heLped in cleaning up the
condition that existed on Turnpike St., near the town line on the
property of the town controlled by the water department and the
condition of the property has been greatly improved.
I wish to thank the various town officials and the citizens for
their cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM H. GALLIVAN,
Local Moth Superintendent.
REPORT OF TREE WARDEN
I herewith submit my annual report as Tree Warden for the
year ending December 31, 1933.
The department has removed five trees the past year. One
elm tree, opposite property of Mary Draper after a public hear-
ing; one tree on Washington St., opposite Walnut St., this : being
the tree which was in a decayed condition and dangerous to public
travel; two trees on Chapman St., one opposite the property of
George Sumner, this being a large wild cherry tree and was re-
moved on request of the property owners on account of the pest
it continually had on it; one tree opposite the property of Elisha
White, this was a maple tree, and was removed because it was
decayed and dangerous to public travel; one tree on Pond St.,
opposite residence of Frank Brown, this tree was decayed and
68Source page 69
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OF CANTON
dangerous to public travel. We also helped the Highway Depart-
ment to remove about fifteen willow trees on Green Lodge St.
The elm trees of the town of Canton were also sprayed with
arsenate of lead. I would recommend that the town spray the elm
trees again this year. The deadwood in the trees was removed
and limbs and hranches overhanging sidewalil: and the streets were
cut off throughout the town. The department ' also cut off Tent
Caterpillars and Fall Web Worm on all roadsides in the town.
I wish to thank the various town officials and the citizens for
their cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM H. GALLIVAN,
Tree Warden.
REPORT OF THE SEWER COMMISSIONERS
The Town of Canton in 1933 appropriated $ 12, 000 to lay
house connections in the various streets where sewers have been
constructed. During the past year 107 such connections have been
made lghout the construc-
and many local men kept employed thrO".
tion season. Due to the large number of unemployed in the Town
that applied for this work, and because only a limited number
could be used at a time, it became necessary to stagger the hours
and limit the woril: to three days per week per man.
As the entire amount of this appropriation, barring some su-
pervision and materials, was expended directly in the Town and
a of our citizens received a very direct benefit both
great number
as to employment and to sewage disposal, we recommend Lh t this
work be continued for another year. There are still abo' t 150
houses remaining that may now be connected and of WhlCh we
expect a large number will apply this year.
During the past year the cost of hiring tr.lcks to carryon
our work has amounted price of a new truck. In order to
to the
remedy this condition we recommend the purchase of a truck for
the Sewer Department.
69Source page 70
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OF CANTON
The Metropolitan Sewer has finally been completed through
the Town and OUl' necessary connections made. This enables all
Our sewers to be in use except those in Pleasant St. and Chapman
St. These two sewers were laid when the State resurfaced the
streets some three years aga. There is a considerable investment
in these two streets and we believe the vaters should seriously can-
sider connecting them up to the rest of the system in order to get
some return on the money invested.
The Hospital School cannection which is ta be built
Canton
without any Townfinancing will , give an ' Outlet to the Sherman
St. sewer at Forge Pond. A sewer laid in Sherman St. from this
outlet to Pleasant St. wO:lld give relief to this whole territory.
To ' Open up the Chapman St. system it would be necessary to
lay a sewer in N epanset , st., and through private land to the
Metropolitan connection near the Neponset Woolen Mills. With
the availability ' Of funds from the Public Works Administration
both P. W. A. and C. W. A.), it would seem that now would
be an economical time ta canstruct either ' One ' Or both of these
systems.
The work ' Of the Department has naturally in-
maintenance
creased due to system being in operating. The sewers have
our
all been cleaned aut, man holes adjusted ta changes in street
grades, and all necessary WOl11l: done to insure a proper ' Operating
system.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN OF CANTON
REPORT OF THE WATER COMMISSIONERS
To the Inhabitants of the Town of Canton:-
The Water Commissioners herewith submit their forty- sixth
annual report.
The Board organized with Michael F. Ward, Chairman, and
Joseph W. Wattles, 3rd, Clerk. Daniel J. Flood was appointed
Collector of Water Rates.
During the year 21 new services and 34 new meters were
added to the lists of the previous year, making the total number
of services 1346 and the total number of meters 1288. No new
hydrants were installed.
The main in Reynolds Street was extended 169 feet and a
hydrant branch 4 feet long was connected therewith. The size
of the pipe is 6 inches.
A communication from the New England Insurance Exchange,
sent to this department under date of Nov. 3, 1933,
gave notice
that the old 8" pipe line supplying water from the upper wells is
inadequate to provide the water requirements of the town and to
maintain the water level in the standpipes for proper fire
protection
at all times. This condition has already been hrought to the at-
tention of the town by YO'',lr board at the last two annual meet-
ings.
The opportunity afforded by the Federal Government, through
its Civil Works Administration, to provide labor and a
large part
of the material for a new pipe line, was taken advantage of.
The local administrator, Mr. Herbert C. O',lshman, secured the ap-
proval of the PI' oject No. 135 for $ 14, 45';)., and he has had the
cooperation of the Water Department in the construction of a 12"
pipe line from the Ward Well on land of the town and thence
fonowing the new road to Pleasant Street, a total distance of 29'50
feet.
A connection
with the present 6" water main in Pleasant Street
will make it possible to pump through the new line as soon as
the necessary pump is installed.
It is the intention to extend the 12" line in Pleasant Street
to connect with the larger main at the Junction of Pine Street.
MICHAEL F. WARD,
CHARLES V. REYNOLDS,
JOSEPH W. WATTLES, 3rd,
Water Commissioners.

which shows an unexpended balance of income. This balance wiIi

TREASURER' S REPORT
January 1, 1934
On account of the action taken by the Town at its annual meet-
ing in March, 1933, the payments appropriated for library
of funds
purposes were directly by the Town Treasurer,
thereafter made
and accordingly the Treasurer' s report covers only those pay-
ments made for expenses incurred during January and February
of 1933. The action taken at the Town Meeting was in pursuance
of recommendations of the Division of Accounts at the State
House, which had advised that town disbursements for all depart-
ments, including public libraries, should be made through the Town
Treas".lrer. The balance on hand of $ 887. 86 still remains in the

fund of five thousand dollars, held by the Town of Canton, the
net income of which is paid to the Trustees, after expense of the
