— Capital Request for CHS Visual Arts Department: Computer Lab Request (Fiscal Year 2023) * PURPOSE, JUSTIFICATION AND | SUPPORT FOR STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK: . The purpose of this Capital request is to ensure student access to digital a-making technology that is aligned with current indusfry standards and. postsecondary programs: cpr ce Currently there are two computer labs that students use for digital artmaking purposes (173 and 216). In the last Capital request cycle (FY 22), one of these labs was teplaced with a Mac desktop lab. This current request is for the second lab to be replaced. This lab is aging and needs replacing. The last major upgrade to this lab was in 2012. This request is to replace the lab with Mac desktops since that is the industry standard platform for digital armaking. This lab replacement will ensure that students have the requisite technology skills and experience for post-secondary/university digital media, visual art, and STEAM related programs. This request captures current and future needs for the Visual Arts Department as well as anticipated digital media needs of the innovation lab. Alignment with the District's Strategic Framework includes: 3.1 Designing Student Learning & Growth: Replacing the second of the two computer labs with a Mac lab will provide students with access to updated industry-standard platforms for digital creative tasks. This computer lab will be used by students taking visual arts classes as well as by students engaged in creative digital learning in the innovation lab. This lab upgrade will provide students with increased opportunities to creatively use digital media tools in engaging and authentic ways as hey learn how artists, designers, and industry professionals engage in creative tasks. Investing in student learning in this area will support our capacity to engage students as digitally literate learners and prepare them for postsecondary learning connected to the visual and digital media arts and STEAM fields. 3.3 Educators’ Creativity & Innovation: Updating this computer lab with Mac desktops will provide teachers with increased opportunities to develop and expand the use of digital media tools and software in the design of their curriculum. Teachers have requested this update to our computer labs to support their ability to keep their curriculum current with industry standards and support student preparation for post-secondary/university programs. This computer jab will be used by staff in the Visual Arts department as well as for interdisciplinary purposes such as STEAM curriculum connected to the innovation lab.

Canton High School Innovation Lab Renovation Introduction Canton High School’s Innovation Lab Design Team is proposing a renovation to room 150, CHS’ Metal Shop. The Innovation Lab Design Team would like to transform the Metal Shop space into an Innovation Lab where students can explore and develop ideas while working alongside like-minded students under the mentorship of a STEAM teacher leader. This space will be conducive to creative and innovative thinking within a comfortable and collaborative workspace with plenty of technology, allowing students to investigate new ways to engage in critical thinking, collaborate around interdisciplinary projects and share their learning with others. This renovation will support various . indicators of CPS' Strategic Framework.! Contents 41. Purpose and Rationale 2.Transforming our Metal Shop 3. 1. Purpose and Rationale Canton High School was awarded a $35,946.00 grant in February of 2020 to offset the durable equipment and training costs of implementing the Project Lead the Way Engineering program. The courses selected for this implementation are Introduction to Engineering Design, Computer Science Principles, and Fnvironmental Sustainability. The goal of the PLTW program at Canton High School is to offer creative and engaging project based learning to encourage our students to become life-long learners and problem solvers. Along the way, students will develop technical and soft skills to be competitive in STEM fields, college and beyond. Our school is implementing PLTW to improve and enhance our current course offerings and enable our students to be competitive when applying to colleges, internships and ultimately, joining the workforce. This aligns with the Canton Public School's Strategic Framework which says, "Public education exists not only within the context of our local Canton community but also within the larger context of our global society. As the world experiences rapid and dramatic changes in technology, the economy, and society, the traditional paradigm of teaching and learning is also changing. More than ever, we must teach our students to collaborate skillfully, to maintain a growth mindset, and to seek and make use of new knowledge." The problem based learning utilized in the PLTW curriculum offers students the means to collaborate with their design team members, learn through failure and iteration, and apply skills learned to new problems. It enables our teachers to use engaging and relevant instruction; integrate technology to create transformational learning experiences for every student taking each class and will enable Canton High to offer these classes to every student as an elective. Due to COVID-19, the original three year implementation has been delayed and compressed and will now begin in the 2021-2022 academic year. During the first year, the Introduction to Engineering Design and Computer Science Principles courses will be offered using the PLTW curriculum. These are current offerings but will transition to the PLTW curriculum and the Computer Science course will become a year long offering instead of a semester course. During the 2022-2023 academic year, a new course entitled Environmental Sustainability will be offered. All durable equipment and teacher training are covered by the grant. Each of these classes, particularly the Introduction to Engineering Design and Environmental Sustainability, will benefit from an innovation space since each class embeds open ended problems where students use the engineering design process to problem solve, critically think and design a solution to the problem. The innovation space will provide the appropriate materials, tools and equipment as well as creative atmosphere to bring student solutions to life! To find out more about each PLTW class, click on the links below:

Introduction to Engineering Design Overview Computer Science Principles Overview Environmental Sustainability Course Overview 2. Transforming our Metal Shop Utilize our current infrastructure to transform our traditional Metal Shop classroom to become a contemporary and adaptable STEM lab capable.of supporting project-based learning. 3. Renovation - Phase i This section will outline the first phase in our transformation and supplemented with associated timelines and costs. 3.1- Equipment Removal Our current Metal Shop includes outdated and seldom used machines, tools, instruments, and appliances. For a more detailed view of our current Metal Shop, please see pictures HERE. We would need to remove items and apparatuses as our first step to transform the space. In consultation with CPS Facilities Director, Brian Lynch, he recommended we rent 5 bins to dispose of equipment. The CHS Innovation Lab team has labeled items to be removed. These bins would cost $700 each, and we respectfully request 5. The total cost would be $3500 to rent these bins?. 3.2 - HVAC At present, the heating system in the Metal Shop can not heat the room to the minimum degree standard required by the Commonwealth (70 F). CHS can not offer courses housed in this space during the second Semester of the school year because the room can not heat during the winter months. In consultation with the Director of Facilities, Brian Lynch, we can arrange for Commercial Builders to provide an estimate for labor and materials for adequate heating and cooling3. 3.3 - Electrical The current space does not have enough electrical outlets to support the digital needs and contemporary equipment. To adequately transform the space and contribute to our durable equipment, we would need 7 Cat 6 mini switches at $40 each. These Cat 6 switches allow multiple computers or wired devices to be utilized at a single workstation. Next, we would need 7 Cat 6 25' pull down cords 2 Appendix A provides itemized expenses. 3 Estimate forthcoming
Tab 24 - School - Bldg Repairs and Improvements.pdf · Source page 25
at $255 each. These cords allow tables and areas to be rearranged allowing for multiple variations of uses and setups. They also allow for wired devices to be located around the room for functionality and organization. We respectfully recommend placing 1 dual cat 6 switch next to each available outlet. A map of where each outlet is to be located can be supplied, if needed. The total cost would be $20654. 3.4- Flooring Collaborative working areas are necessary for digging into hard problems. In order to support collaboration, flexible seating and work stations are needed. To support the often rearrangement of desks, chairs, and workstations, the floor in the metal shop needs to be polished. Eastern Concrete Polishing provided an estimate at $70355. 3.5 - WiFi The current space does not have WiFi access. The desktop computer is connected to the internet via wired network. WiFi is needed in the space to support portable devices; Chromebooks, Laptops, IPADs, etc. Installation for WiFi accessibility can be acquired through WiFi extenders. 5 at $30 each would bring the total to $150°. 4. Renovation - Phase 2 This section details the second and final phase of the renovation and outlines the learning equipment needed. 4.1 - Desks The work tables in the shop spaces are sturdy and still functionable. They look old and currently are not easily movable, but if they are refurbished they will suit the needs of the multipurpose Innovation Lab space. Refurbishing would include: e Refinishing the wood tops, perhaps wrapping tops that are damaged with metal. e Repainting the metal bases. 4 See Appendix A for itemized expenses 5 See Appendix A for itemized expenses 8 See Appendix A for itemized expenses
Tab 24 - School - Bldg Repairs and Improvements.pdf · Source page 26
e Adding a metal frame/base so they can be put on industrial-lockable casters. The casters will allow the tables to be moved around the space, creating a more flexible use of the space. Brian Lynch can save costs by enlisting a member of his team to refurbish 4 desks. This would save on outsourcing costs. 4.2 - Chairs Innovation Lab and technology furniture requires a flexible office furniture solution to help maximize the learning environment. 16” 4 Leg AkD® READY® Chair, Metal Glide would be optimal for our lab. 15 chairs at $200 brings the total to $3000. 4.3 - Paint The room is in need of a fresh layer of paint. Brian Lynch can enlist his team to help with the painting of the room to save on labor costs. All that would be needed is the paint. 5. TOWN OF CANTON FORM B - FISCAL 2023 CAPITAL PROJECT / EQUIPMENT REQUEST DEPARTMENT: SUBMITTED BY: Technology Julie Shore/Mike Wentland PROJECT / EQUIPMENT TITLE: Classroom Technology Setups TOTAL PROJECT / EQUIPMENT COST (must be at least $5,000): $75,000 DESCRIPTION: Classroom Technology Setups PURPOSE AND JUSTIFICATION: In continuation of technology upgrades throughout the district and the purchase of laptops for each classroom teacher and specialists coupled with the safety concems over the outdated windows 7 desktop computers, we are requesting this funding to provide our classroom teachers and other educators with a technology setup that includes a monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse and various needed cords and auxiliary items. We want teachers and staff to be mobile in and out of the classroom and have access to all their technology as part of teaching and learning such as projector and doc cam. Having an efficient and effective professional environment is important in our classrooms and leaming spaces. In addition, currently most of our classroom and leaming staff offices house very outdated windows 7 desktop computers that pose security risks to our networks, We will not be spending any district to replace those devices. We are looking to fund 300 setups at about $250 per unit.
