I purchased a cheaper Epson document reader two years ago through supply money and it has
-,
Iready broken. It also did not feature a high resolution automatic focus/clarity adjustment
)hi.ch is important, especially when sharing student work that is handwritten in various types
of pen colors/pencil and on a variety of paper types/qualities.

Description:
,The Samsung presenter is a high quality, versatile document reader that can automatically adjust the
brightness and clarity of w.Ork that is being viewed. The unit can be connected directly to the overhead
LCD cameras in the classrooms, and a toggle switch can be connected to offer easy switching from
between_using_the
viewinginformation-generated-on-the-computer-orthe-viewing-of-DV-D-seamlessly
Presenter to view documents via the ceiling camera. The cost of 1 projection camera is $595 per unit, so
this cable hook-up system will save a lot of money and will allow for easy access to the technology.
Justification for Samsung Digital Presenters
The Presenter is a must-have piece of instructional equipment that effectively supports instruction in ELA
classes. The Presenter allows teachers to demonstrate their own "thinking out loud" processes related to
the instruction of English. Here is an overview of how its usage can support instruction and student
learning:
1. Instant accountability for group work. Students asked to share work product upon completion
of objectives with the class. This technology provides instant feedback for students
2. Writing Strategies: Teachers can easily model excellent writing by showing student work. This
will eliminate photocopying and will allow for easily singling out certain aspects of the work as it
applies to the slcill being taught.
3. More Writing Strategies: In addition to modeling student writing, teachers can also model the
revising process by thinking out loud while demonstrating revising strategies.
4. Reading Strategies: Teachers can model how to create active reading notes in real :time;
therefore, students can connect the verbalized thought processes to margin notetaking. Modeling
the thought processes behind this reading strategy is much more effective than simply providing a
photocopy with a sample of notes or by using the computer and simply showing a static sample of
the end product. This device also removes the step of having to scan a document into the
computer.
to share with students, thus
5. The ease of use also supports a variety of enrichment materials
enhancing their understanding of the relevancy and importance of the literature they read. Works
of art, original editions on author's manuscripts, photographs, political cartoons (the list goes on)
can be instantly shared with students. Students can also easily share these types of enrichment
materials when preparing presentations or to enrich a writing such as a memoir or a descriptive
narrative, etc. These types of enrichment materials also encourage and support inter-disciplinary
thinking across the curriculum.
6. If each teacher has his/her own Presenter, teachers have an effective option to anticipate confusion
or to clarify a concept or to demonstrate a skill. This technology provides teachers with a powerful
tool when checking for understanding. Excerpts from literary works, student and teacher writing,
samples of test questions and responses can all be done in the moment on an as-needed basis.
There are probably countless other ways to use the digital Presenter that I am not even aware of.Source page 64

Hi Brian,
Following up on our conversation yesterday, our understanding is that Mr. Ed Walsh Town of Canton Building
Commissioner is requesting the following:
1. An affidavit produced by a MA registered design professional that certifies the structural adequacy
and safety of the structure, as stipulated in the MA State Building Code, section 1001.3.2, which requires the
"testing and certification" of "all exterior bridges, steel or wooden stairways, fire escapes and egress balconies"
be conducted every five years.
j 2. Several questions regarding the "Press Box" as follows: Is the top deck structurally sound for
coaches? How many coaches are allowed to be on the top deck at one time to view a sporting event? Can the
split columns be repaired? If so how should they be repaired? How many people can use the main area of the
press box?
3. The athletic department would like to add approximately 220 pounds of speakers to the structure. Can
any more dead load be added to the current structure or does additional bracing need to be provided?
As you know Mike Flaherty recently visited the site to view the conditions. Mike then reviewed his observations
and Mr. Walsh's requests with our structural engineer David Knuttunen. We offer the following
thoughts/comments:
As the MA Building Code Section 1001.3.2 is literally worded, the structure must be "certified for structural
adequacy and safety". To do that responsibly would require both a thorough condition survey and a complete
structural analysis, and verification that both the original design and the current condition are such that the
structure can resist all Code-required forces. Since the certifying person is rarely the original designer, and
original design documents are generally not available, such a certification would also require a detailed field
investigation to determine all the relevant structural sizes, details, etc., including those (footings, connections to
; other construction) that are not directly exposed to view. The only alternative would be a full-scale, in-place,
load test.Source page 75

In order for us to answer the requested items, a fair amount of on-site review and in-house structural
engineering work is required. As part of the on-site review, an inspection of the footings is necessary, which
requires excavation of a couple of test pits. Also it would be necessary to cut some samples (coupons) from
the metal tube columns and have them tested for yield strength. Also to answer the question pertaining to the
speakers we would need at least a preliminary sketch showing the proposed speaker locations, and some
information on their size (physical dimensions) as well as their weight. Original design drawings for the
bleachers and press box structure are also needed.
To perform the necessary structural engineering work, at this stage we expect our cost of services to be
$7,500 to $8,000 plus reimbursable costs for the metal tube columns material sampling/testing and the excavation
of the foundation test pits. Our cost of services may be reduced; the amount of savings depends on how
complete and accurate the original design drawings are found to be.
After your review please call or email me to further discuss. Thank You.
Best Regards
i
