Memorandum
DATE: November 30, 2011
TO: Ken Leon, Canton Public Schools
FROM: Ken Beck
SUBJECT: School Energy Conservation Measures
COPIES TO:
BLW Engineers has reviewed the engineering studies for mechanical systems upgrades for the
Canton Public Schools and recommends the following Energy Conservation Measures be
considered:
Canton High School
(247,803 sf; 1970/2005)
ECM-1 Kitchen Hood Exhaust Controls ($25,000.00)
The recommendation to provide a kitchen hood exhaust system control similar
to Melink controls is a low cost energy conservation measure that will provide
almost immediate payback and is recommended.
ECM-2 Condensing Boiler ($160,000.00)
BLW recommends that Canton consider the addition of a single 100hp gas fired,
condensing type boiler to provide high efficiency hot water heating during the
shoulder seasons a,s an energy conservation measure that will provide almost
immediate paybkk and is recommended.
ECM-2 Indirect Hot Water Heaters ($25,000.00)
Should ECM-2 be implemented, BLW recommends that Canton consider
utilizing the new condensing boiler for domestic hot water on a year round basis
through the installation of indirect storage type water heaters as an energy
conservation measure that will provide almost immediate payback and is
recommended.
Galvin Middle School
(131,151 sf; 1973)
ECM-1 Improve Boiler Controls ($5,000.00)
The recommendation to update the Boiler lead/lag controls is a low cost energy
conservation measure that will provide almost immediate payback and is
recommended.

Memorandum
ECM-2 Condensing Boiler for DHW ($5,000.00)
The recommendation to modify the existing system operation to utilize the
existing condensing boiler for the domestic hot water system is a low cost energy
conservation measure that will provide almost immediate payback and is
recommended.
ECM-3 Condensing Boiler for DHW ($25,000.00)
The recommendation to update the controls with a new head end system for
remote monitoring/control is a low cost energy conservation measure that will
provide almost immediate payback and is recommended. •
Hot Water Pump Motor Replacement ($30,000.00)
BLW would recommend that all three hot water pump motors be replaced and
provided with new premium efficiency motors, variable speed drives and
differential pressure controls.
Hansen Elementary School
(60,640 sf; 1969)
ECM-1 Boiler Setpoint Control ($7,500.00)
The recommendation to update the Boiler Setpoint Control is a low cost energy
conservation measure that will provide almost immediate payback and is
recommended.
ECM-2 EMS Zone Scheduling and Remote Interface ($10,000.00)
The recommendation to update the time clocks with EMS zone scheduling and
remote interface is a low cost energy conservation measure that will provide
almost immediate payback and is recommended.
Hot Water Pump Motor Replacement ($20,000.00)
BLW would recommend that both hot water pump motors be replaced and
provided with new premium efficiency motors, variable speed drives and
differential pressure controls.
Kennedy Elementary School
(54,800 sf; 1968)
ECM-1 EMS Zone Scheduling and Remote Interface ($10,000.00)
The recommendation to update the time clocks with EMS zone scheduling and
remote interface is a low cost energy conservation measure that will provide
almost irmnediate payback and is recommended.

Memorandum
Hot Water Pump Motor Replacement ($20,000.00)
BLW would recommend that both hot water pump motors be replaced and
provided with new premium efficiency motors, variable speed drives and
differential pressure controls.
Luce Elementary School
(67,225 sf; 1950/1988/2000)
ECM-1 Pneumatic Controls Upgrade ($150,000.00)
ECM-2 is for an energy management system installation; due to the scope of
work it would probably be in the best interest of the school to abandon
pneumatics altogether and provide a fully functional DDC system for the school.
ECM-2 Install Energy Management System ($50,000,00)
The recommendation to install a new energy management system has a high
first cost but is a conservation measure that will provide almost immediate
returns and is recommended. Not being able to adequately control the building
results in a tremendous waste of energy.
ECM-3 Hot Water Pump Motor Replacement ($20,000.00)
BLW would recommend that both hot water pump motors be replaced and
provided with new premium efficiency motors, variable speed drives and
differential pressure controls.
ECM-4 Condensing Boiler ($100,000.00)
BLW recommends that Canton consider the addition of a single 100hp gas fired,
condensing type boiler to provide high efficiency hot water heating during the
shoulder seasons as an energy conservation measure that will provide almost
immediate payback and is recommended.
ECM-5 Indirect Hot Water Heaters ($20,000.00)
Should ECM-4 be implemented, BLW recommends that Canton consider
utilizing the new condensing boiler for domestic hot water on a year round basis
through the installation of indirect storage type water heaters as an energy
conservation measure that will provide almost immediate payback and is
recommended.
