1925 American LaFrance Fire Engine Restoration
Applicant: Canton Fire Department
Project Cost: $198,000
CPA Funding Requested: $198,000
The antique fire apparatus was purchased for just
under $20K in 1925. It was the first motorized Fire
Truck purchased by the Town of Canton.
Complete restoration of the artifact includes body,
paint, mechanical, decoration and plating, and
includes operation and maintenance training for Fire
Department personnel.
The Fire Department intends to display the restored
truck and to use the engine in parades as a tribute to
the Town’s firefighting history.

Hagan Court Emergency Egress
Applicant: Canton Housing Authority
Project Cost: $330,000
CPA Funding Requested: $80,000
Constructed in 1964, Hagan Court provides 74 units of
affordable housing to local seniors and veterans.
The failing external steel staircases are original to the
buildings. This project will replace the emergency
egress staircases across all nine building.
This is a supplemental funding request. In 2021, ATM
approved $100K to undertake this work. Given
impacts of COVID and supply chain issues, the project
cost has more than doubled.
CCPC Vote: Recommend Funding Full CPA Request of $80,000Source page 10
Affordable Housing Trust Transfer
Applicant: Municipal Affordable Housing Trust
Project Cost: $60,000
CPA Funding Requested: $60,000
The Municipal Affordable Housing Trust was created through a vote of
Annual Town Meeting in 2021, and a CPA Fund transfer of $50,000 was
approved at the same time for the purpose of hiring a consultant to update
Canton’s Housing Action Plan.
The Housing Production Plan is nearing completion, and the Housing Trust
has determined that increased staffing capacity is critical to implementing
their goals and priorities.
The recommended fund transfer will support the hiring of a part-time
Housing Coordinator who will be responsible for managing the existing
affordable housing inventory and for expanding the Trust’s ability to
implement affordable housing strategies.

Reading Garden Design Study
Applicant: Canton Public Library
Project Cost: $17,700
CPA Funding Requested: $15,000
In response to the pandemic, the Canton Public Library
introduced a series of widely popular outdoor programs,
serving more than 4,000 residents in 2021.
The library intends to continue outdoor programming, but
realize the need to improve the nearly 10,000 ft2 of outdoor
space to meet current programming needs and to address
safety and accessibility concerns.
The estimated cost of the design study is $18K and will
address all outdoor areas on the library property. The Library
Trustees vote to cover costs in excess of $15K.

Mutch Rink Design Study
Applicant: Parks & Recreation Department & Canton Youth Hockey
Project Cost: $50,000
CPA Funding Requested: $50,000
The Mutch outdoor skating rink was constructed
in 1999 and resurfaced in 2010.
Despite ongoing maintenance, the asphalt
surface of the rink has significant cracks. In
addition, the rink is not ADA accessible.
Canton Youth Hockey withdrew a CPA funding
request to rebuild the rink in order to partner
with the Recreation Department in pursuit of a
design study that will identify project needs and
create a reliable cost estimate for construction.
CCPC Vote: Recommend Funding Full CPA Request of $50,000Source page 13
Galvin Basketball Courts
Applicant: Canton School Department
Project Cost: $54,095
CPA Funding Requested: $54,095
The CCPC recommended and Town Meeting approved $35K for
the rehabilitation of the courts in 2020. The School Department
reconsidered the scope of work after observing the appearance of
cracks in the courts at the Kennedy School shortly after
resurfacing.
The revised approach involves removing roots, repairing the
concrete and installing a modular tile court system. The modular
system carries a 15 year warranty.
This was the School Committee’s priority project for FY 23. The
combined CPA commitment to this project is just over $89K.

Heritage Site Restrooms
Applicant: Select Board and Revere & Son Heritage Trust
Project Cost: $228,000
CPA Funding Requested: $210,000
The Paul Revere Heritage Site was purchased using CPA
funds approved in 2015. Now that the green space is open to
the public, it receives significant foot-traffic and will
increasingly serve as a host site for public events.
The proposed, 4-unit, ADA accessible, prefabricated
bathroom facilities will provide a much needed amenity for
the growing number of park users and for future events and
site rentals.
The Town agreed to provide in-kind (trenching) services
needed for installation, and ongoing maintenance costs will
be covered by the Revere & Son Heritage Trust.

Hansen School Playground Replacement
Applicant: School Department
Project Cost: $290,124
CPA Funding Requested: $286,924
The Hansen Playground is the second oldest in the
Canton School System. A 2017 Playground Inspection
noted the age and numerous retrofits to existing
equipment and found the structures to be inappropriate
for the space and users.
The estimated cost of a new playground is approximately
$290K. The rehabilitation project includes poured-in-
place surfacing, which adds significantly to the project
cost, but greatly improves accessibility.
The School Department has committed to covering any
expenses that exceed the $286,924 requested from CPA.
