REPAIR AND RENOVATION OF INTERIOR: This project, Chapter 3 of The Next Chapter, addresses cri cal repairs resul ng
from water damage and the renova on of the interior of the library. There are no plans to increase the physical footprint
of the library. The work will be phased over two years and will not require the library to close.

Damage: Severe water damage has affected walls, ceilings and rugs. The three original, 1902 rooms of the
library have sustained damage to the horse-hair plaster walls and original decora ve molding that need to be handled by
a company specializing in historical re-crea on and preserva on. A video tour of the damage can be found here:
h ps://drive.google.com/file/d/1F-X320CrnsAFDJUUw6-ANG792Q8tK1s4/view?usp=sharing

Renova7on: Use of the library has changed significantly in the 21 years since the library was last renovated and
expanded. In 2024 the library received nearly 200,000 individual visits with 178,453 books and 99,047 ebooks circulated.
Our excellent library staff presented 628 programs a5ended by 15,159 children and adults.

Current challenges include a lack of quiet study spaces, insufficient mee ng rooms and noise mi ga on. The
library is fortunate to have 30 to 50 teens and tweens visit the library every day a7er school. Many have no other place
to go, especially on school half-days. Our wonderful Young Adult librarians plan programs and ac vi es for them but,
being teens, they are naturally noisy and disturb other patrons. The new plans will provide a solu on.
