Canton Sustainability CommitteeMinutes August 31, 2020 Meeting Held Via Zoom Members Present: Christine Smith, Andrea Stuart, Erin Connor, Patti McDermott, Tim Calabrese Review and Approval of Minutes from August 3, 2020 Motion made and seconded to approve the minutes from August 3. Unanimously approved. MAPC Accelerating Climate Resiliency Grant Town Planner Laura Smead submitted the proposal for this grant today. The proposal is to create a public education plan for climate change and climate-related hazards. She will update us as soon as she hears anything on the grant award. Trash and Recycling Survey The survey questions were reviewed and discussed. Laura Smead had given input as well. Everyone felt that the survey was in good shape. There was a discussion about when to put out the survey. Prior to going live, we will need Select Board approval. Also, members felt that the public, especially those with children, were survey-overloaded as many surveys were done about the start of school. There was a discussion about an incentive to get residents to fill out the survey. Due to procurement requirements, and the fact that the committee does not have a budget, the committee cannot purchase anything to give out. Erin offered to look into donations to use for a drawing. Rain Barrel Program Christine reported on the program with The Great American Rain Barrel Company that was first discussed at the last meeting. She connected with DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta, who said that DPW could work with the Committee on this program. After discussion, it was decided that spring would be the best time of year to implement. The Committee will discuss further as we approach spring and would need to present to the Select Board. Publicity and Website Tim had looked at the Planning Department website and noted that it linked to sustainability items and that the Sustainability Committee website could also link back to those. He suggested that grants could be added to the website, and that it could tie in to the Master Plan and provide more information about what the grants mean. There was also a suggestion that the Sustainability Committee could do a year in review of what had been accomplished in the past year. Meeting was adjourned at 8 pm. Next Meeting is October 5. (Note this 8/31 meeting was a substitute for the September meeting – whose date fell on the Labor Day holiday.)
