Follow up on Discussion from March Meeting:
There was no April meeting due to COVID-19 and so this is the first meeting held via zoom
There was a need to recap what happened at the March Meeting
Town Planner Laura Smead and Sean from Mass Audubon had attended and talked about collaboration on public education
Our climate work overlaps with work done at Mass Audubon
There was talk of hosting informal community conversations on climate
Next steps would be to work on items form Master Plan; Laura had wanted a website to get all the work into one spot.
Need to follow up with Laura & Sean on next steps
Follow up on Trash & Recycling Discussion from February DEP Presentation:
There is a lot of room for improvement based on the trash numbers provided by Kathi from DEP
Christine reported that DPW did get the survey numbers input into Retrac by the deadline so the town is eligible for DEP grants
The group thought that Sustainable Materials Recovery Program Grant would be a good opportunity for Canton
This grant supports local recycling, composting, reuse, source reduction, program development and enforcement activities
This could be used to start a Mattress Recycling Incentive Program which would be an easy step for Canton
We need DPW assistance as the applications go through Retrac
Patti said she would reach out to DPW to see about applying for this, while also offering to help provide support to the DPW
The deadline is June 10th
There are also grants available to switch to PAYT and Kathi could provide information about successful programs.
Green Team:
Erin reported that prior to the quarantine, she had created a Green Team at the Hanson School.
They were doing training and assessment when the shutdown occurred
The goal would be to re-create the program at other Canton schools – will have to be re-visited once schools re-open
Earth Day:
There was discussion of postponed Earth Day celebrations as in person events for actual Earth Day in April had been cancelled
Christine had heard about something organized through NepRWA but had not had a chance to follow up
Phil offered to follow up – Christine will provide contact information to him.
Meeting was adjourned at 8 pm
NEXT MEETING:JUNE 1, 2020 – VIA ZOOM
