MINUTES
Wayfinding Sign Design Task Force
Tuesday, October 15th, 2019 at 3:30pm
79 Pleasant Street, Canton, MA 02021
Conservation Office Conference Room

Present: Emily Prigot, Regen Milani, Laura Smead, Vic Del Vecchio
Not Present: Mike Loughran, Larry Bogue, Patti McDermott

1. Discussed the progress on the Canton Wayfinding and Sign Design Guidelines book so far, with the
following recommendations:
a. Emily Prigot will continue to fill in any missing information, and delete any areas that seem
unnecessary or duplicative
b. Laura Smead will draft the Wayfinding (e.g. downtown) and Parking sign description sections
c. Laura Smead moved the section on fonts and viewing distances from Emily’s description on
sign design into the section on Fonts and graphics.
d. Both Emily and Laura will have to pay attention to image copyrights, and use high resolution
versions so that the Boston Mutual Design team can easily translate the Word draft into a
more professionally designed version
e. Add in the appearance of entryway signs (e.g. white posts either side) into the installation
section
f. Cross reference installation sections and techniques with either Appendices or beginning
sign descriptions
g. Laura will add her references and resources to the document
h. Make sure that the kiosk design description and in the appendices states that a
lockable/openable plexi glass cover is needed so material can be protected but still updated
i. Add in Town examples into graphics section
j. In the symbols section use a more modern form of the accessible symbol, consider adding
bow hunting, a sensitive environmental area or wetlands signage, pickleball, mountain
biking, and possibly an alternative symbol for multipurpose field.
k. Use high-resolution and copyright free images for symbols – put in separate folder
l. Appendix 1- replace sign examples with examples already identified by the larger group, and
supplement with Town examples
m. Appendix 2, add link/source, note a changeable plexi glass front is needed; for Finger Lakes
Land trust, have a description with links only, maybe an image – shorten greatly
n. Appendix 3, add one more vendor, add an image, and make a shorter link to Uline vendor
2. Discuss format and type of other “next step” recommendations to the Selectmen
a. This was discussed as a short memo describing how the guidelines book might be used and
distributed to staff and the public, as well as describing recommended next steps around
downtown parking and wayfinding
3. Update on Paul Revere Heritage Site interpretive signage (fonts, seal placement)
a. Emily has provided the font information
b. Bases are all in except one
c. Interpretive panels are nearly done (except one)
d. Expect to have them installed this fall
4. Proposed next steps
a. Emily and Laura continue working on changes to the draft guidelines book and solicit further
feedback from the task force
