Chairman Pando opens the hearing and reads the petition. Chairman Pando states the
application has been filled out properly and the Board has received a certified list of
abutters from the Board of Assessor's. Mr. Michael Loughran explains he is wearing two
hats tonight for this hearing. He is the Vice Chair for the School Committee and also the
Treasurer for Canton Little League. Mr. Loughran stated in 2002 he and another parent
started a girl's fast pitch softball program. The town didn't offer fast pitch until you got to
high school. In 2012 they put this under the Canton Little League charter. In the first year
they had 147 players in the spring. Since then they have added spring, summer, and fall
travel teams. They even had some winter leagues. They have also installed a scoreboard at
the Walsh field. Mr. Loughran states right now for the 2019 spring program they have 500
registrations. He states it is a growing program. Mr. Loughran states in the town there are 7
baseball fields in which 5 of them have lighting. There are also 3 softball fields and none
of them have lights. There are not enough fields for the amount of practices and games
they need to have. Mr. Loughran states with the recent time change for Canton High
School it pushes the sports programs back and they are starting games later which pushes
recreation and youth sports back as well. Right now games are not starting until roughly
6:30PM and they are not able to finish the games due to running out of daylight. This
request for field lights will allow the kids to actually finish the games. These lights would
also benefit the ladies softball program run by the Canton Recreation Department and also
the high school teams. They would be able to offer night games. Mr. Loughran explains
from his years of coaching he knows every kid looks forward to playing under the lights.
Right now they try to schedule some at the baseball fields. This is not ideal due to different
dimensions for the bases and the mound as well as having grass infields. Mr. Loughran
states right now they need 5 or 6 poles to light Walsh field but they also wanted to look
into the future in case they wanted to add lights to Gibson field which is the High School
baseball field. So two of the poles will be positioned to be able to light both fields. They
are looking into some LED lighting. Mr. Barry Nectow is looking into some rebates.
