"TOWN CLEW<
CANTON, MIl~
Chief Berkowitz came and talked at length about traffic issues in the town which is a priority for
the Police Department. The whole department is involved, keeping track of tickets, etc. The
individual patrol officers take ownership of where they think enforcement is needed. People
need to use common sense and more public awareness and it is not an exact science. Directed
patrols come from citizen complaints, etc. He also said that all towns are cut through towns and
its not an exact science. They understand that people need to get to work on time and that
speeding is an issue. He thinks the movable signs that show speed are very effective and would
be good to use on Bolivar Street. Right now the DPW has two and the PD has one.
A specific area of concern is the Pleasant/Angela Street intersection where accidents occur.
Also the Canton Junction and Chapman Street Train Stations Pedestrian Crosswalks are an issue.
The board talked about the need for better signage/flashing lights in the vicinity of the Luce
School and on Pecunit Street. Intersections that need to be looked at are Church Street and
Bolivar and Washington. He said careful thought needs to be put into stop signs but were
needed on Wentworth Road. We also talked about the trailer deliveries at Dunkin Donuts in the
center that block the road and are a problem. Discussed the possibility of having 40 hours a
week dedicated to law enforcement.
Updates from members:
Kevin Feeney spoke with the principal of the Luce will be meeting with her and the CAPT and they did
do a traffic concern form. Possible one way during specific hours and parking on one side of
street only.
All the members along with Mark Porter discussed putting together three issues to Selectmen for town
meeting. Dollars for traffic study of downtown street scape that was done and its impact, Study of the
intersection of Randolph and Washington —layout options, 3-way stop, full set of lights and more solar
signs along with another trailer sign.
All members will identify crosswalks in their precincts that need to be made more visible, etc.
Mark Porter will check to see about the bumpout and Boliver (removing it) and removing one parking
spot and pricing for the additional signage. Still need a phone number for the State to give people who
have concerns over the Route 138 lighting and layout changes.
