Project
presentations

Project: Wild Goose Chase (Friendship) QuiltCPA Category: Historic Preservation
Project Proponent: Marie Gibbs, Canton Historical Society
Amount Requested: $2705.00

Mrs.
Gibbs presented her grant request for support of the preservation and stabilization of the Friendship Quilt. The role of quilts in our history is an important aspect of the request to
help preserve this particular quilt as a rich part of Canton’s history. The Wild Goose Chase (Friendship) Quilt was created by several prominent women around 1853. This 160-year-old
textile is closely tied to the Tucker and Fenno Families among others. The Historical Society owns four quilts and this quilt may date to as early as 1840, but more likely 1850-1853.
The Historical Society is bringing some private money to supplement this request.

Project: Canton Corner Cemetery
CPA Category: Historic Preservation
Project Proponents: Wally Gibbs
& Kathi Keith Canton Historical Commission & Michael Trotta, DPW (Mr. Trotta was absent)
Amount Requested: $74,210.00

Mr. Gibbs presented the grant for the preservation and cleaning
of historic gravestones at the Canton Corner Cemetery. The project covers the cleaning and resetting (stabilization) of 89 grave markers that are in danger of succumbing to the elements.
This project also calls for the building of a new retaining wall near the “Receiving Tomb.” There was discussion relative to the Secretary of Interior Standards for materials and installation
of the new retaining wall. The Canton Historical Commission is researching the question with the Massachusetts Historical Commission. This project, if funded, will take three years to
complete.
