Classification Hearin, Board of Assessors
Motion was made to open the Classification Hearing.
Motion: Mr. Salvatori Second: Mrs. Elkort Vote: 5-0
Mr. Salvatori opened the hearing by reading the legal ad that was advertised in the Patriot
Ledger.
Mr. Rocco Digirolamo, Chairman of the Board of Assessors noted that the Board was
recommending setting the residential tax rate at $9.98 per thousand and the commercial
rate at $19.68 per thousand. He noted that this would be a $.64 increase for residential
and a $1.28 increase for commercial from last year. He noted that the majority of the
increase was as a result of last year's passage of the override.
Mr. Digirolamo also noted that there were 18 new homes built in Canton last year and
there were 151 new condos constructed. He noted that the Town's total property value
was currently 4.17 Billion dollars, which was a $994,700 increase over last year.
Ms. Elkort asked about the 10 year inspections. Mr. Wieliczki responded that next year
the Assessors Office will be conducting its revaluation along with the 10 year inspections
of every property in Canton. He estimated the project to cost $290,000 and take about 6
months.
Mr. Del Vecchio asked how the average assessed value of property in Canton went up
while the market value was declining.
