BOARD OF SELECTMEN MINUTES February 2, 2005 MEMORIAL HALL Present: Avril T. Elkort, Vice-Chairman; Robert E. Burr, Jr., Clerk; Victor D. Del Vecchio, Member; Gerald A. Salvatori, Jr., Member; William T. Friel, Town Administrator; and Judy Nelson, Administrative Secretary Location: Salah Room, Memorial Hall Vice Chairman Elkort called the Meeting of the Board of Selectmen to order at 7:06 p.m. She apologized for the Chairman; Mr. Connolly who was unable to attend tonight's meeting. Mr. Connolly was out of town on business. Mr. Friel noted that per the Board's direction the Department Heads were extended an invitation to present any additional information they felt the Board might require to go ahead with the Capital Budget Requests now being contemplated. Mr. Friel noted that there is an additional 1.89 million dollars in funding that is available. He noted that other items on the table were the possible Public Works Facility, streetlight project, and the schools have also noted interest in accessing a portion of these funds. Canton Fire Department - Chief Tim Ronavne: Chief Ronayne presented a packet on Fiscal Year 2006 Capital Budget Requests Replace Tanker-l (attached hereto and made a part hereof). Chief Ronayne noted that Tanker-l is a 1974 Mack, 2,000-gallon water tanker. This apparatus has served the Town very well in two different capacities. It was first chassis that was used for the Town of Canton DPW refuse pickup service. The truck was purchased from a local contractor. The students at the Blue Hill Regional School constructed the tool cabinet and painted the truck. The remainder of the work was done by the firefighters and the mechanics at the DPW Garage. This vehicle does not meet the current NFP A Standards. Because of the age of the truck, the acquiring of parts is difficult to obtain. The Town currently has several areas such as Lake Road and areas off Green Street where there is no hydrant service and the Fire Department does have to transport water. A tanker is also necessary for Highway responses and wild land/brush fires. Due to the age and not meeting the current NFP A Safety Standards this unit should be replaced immediately. The estimated costs for this piece of equipment as required by the Town of Canton Fire Department would be in the range of $285,000.00 - $295,000.00. The Chief noted that it was unfortunate that the Ladder truck failed testing and had to unexpectedly be replaced, but noted that the lease to own purchase saved the Town a substantial amount.
