BOARD OF SELECTMEN MINUTES JUNE 15, 2004 MEMORIAL HALL Present: John J. Connolly, Chairman; Avril T. Elkort, Vice-Chairperson; Robert E. Burr, Jr., Clerk; Victor D. Del Vecchio, Member; Gerald A. Salvatori, Jr., Member; William T. Friel, Town Executive Secretary; and Matthew A. Romero, Administrative Secretary Location - Salah Room, Memorial Hall Chairman Connolly called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM. Fire Station Project and New Hires - Chief Thomas J. Ronayne, III Chief Ronayne introduced new firefighters Thomas W. Driscoll and Alexandra I. Bergeron to the Board, noting that they had come fully trained and with good paramedic experience. He also noted that three new positions were opened due to retirement and in line of duty injury, and would be filled within the current budgetary constraints. He discussed an operational change in the Fire Department, noting that a shift compliment had been defined, when it had heretofore been open-ended. A full shift would now include a captain, a lieutenant, six emergency medical technicians, and 4 paramedics. The Canton Association of Industries (CAI) had donated $lK to the Fire Department, which was to be used to purchase Pulse/Oximeters for both ambulances. He asked the Board to formally accept the donation. The motion was to accept the CAr's donation. Motion: Mr. Salvatori Second: Ms. Elkort VOTE: 5 - 0 The Chief also complimented Firefighter/EMT Herbert "Butch" King for his work on the Defibrillator program, allowing Canton to be awarded the "Heart Safe Community" Award. The Chief congratulated Firefighter Edward McLeod for receiving the Medal of Valor this year for his rescue work, only seven of which are given out by the Commonwealth each year. The Chief apologized for not following the normal protocol for agenda item submission, but requested the Board to consider a Reserve Fund Transfer Request. He had discussed the transfer with the Finance Director as a means to replace a rescue boat that had been deemed unsafe for use. Mr. Friel noted that while there would likely be other methods of funding eventually, this transfer would allow the boat to be purchased in a timely manner for safety purposes and allow for the alternative funding at a later date.
